Daniel Abbott, 48, turned himself in to Wall Township police on Monday, May 13, the department said in a news release. He was charged with fourth-degree assault by auto.

Wall police responded to a crash on Lakewood Allenwood Road on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023. A 73-year-old Belmar man suffered severe injuries in the wreck.

Investigators said Abbott was driving west in a Ford "full-size van" when he crossed the center line and hit the Belmar man who was driving an oncoming motorcycle. Police said Abbott using his cellphone was a cause of the crash.

The motorcyclist was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He spent several months in the Neptune hospital.

The Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team and the county's prosecutor's office helped in the investigation.
